West Seattle Weather Watch: Not to panic you or anything, but…

(WSB photo by Ellen Cedergreen)
Just five days after SDOT invited the media to come see its winter-weather equipment and listen to the readiness plan … there seems to be a slight chance of its deployment within a week. Late today, the National Weather Service issued a “special weather statement” for much of Western Washington, including our area, raising the possibility — however small — of cold weather that could even bring a bit of snow. From the advisory (yes, it’s published in all-caps):

…A CHANGE TO MUCH COLDER CONDITIONS IS POSSIBLE FRIDAY INTO NEXT WEEKEND…

COLD AIR IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER WESTERN CANADA DURING THE UPCOMING WEEK. THERE ARE STRONG INDICATIONS THAT CHANGES IN THE WIND FLOW ALOFT TOWARD THE END OF THE WEEK WILL ALLOW SOME OF THIS COLDER AIR OVER WESTERN CANADA TO FILTER INTO WESTERN WASHINGTON FRIDAY OR SATURDAY.

WEATHER GUIDANCE ALSO SUGGESTS THAT THERE IS A RISK OF SNOW…OR MIXED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS OVER PORTIONS OF THE AREA FRIDAY OR SATURDAY. THE HIGHEST RISK WILL BE WHERE THE AIR IS COLDER…OVER THE NORTH INTERIOR.

WHILE WEATHER GUIDANCE HAS BEEN CONSISTENT IN SHOWING A CHANGE TO A COLDER WEATHER PATTERN…THEY HAVE BEEN UNEVEN IN SHOWING HOW COLD IT WILL GET AND HOW MUCH…IF ANY…SNOW WILL FALL.

NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU COULD PREPARE FOR THE FIRST POSSIBILITY OF WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THE LOWLANDS.

SDOT’s snow/ice-route maps are online here; here’s the direct link to the West Seattle segment. P.S. No word from famous forecaster Cliff Mass yet, at least as of 5:30 pm; we’ll keep checking.

Hi! the all caps don’t bother me, but there is a very easy way to change it to lower case, if you are interested.

Copy the text and paste into an excel spreadsheet. Then in a different cell type =LOWER(A1). Drag the formula down to include all rows with the original text.

The result should have all lower case words.

Sorry to be off topic, feel free to delete this.

Oh, my… it took me far longer than it should have to figure out what the word “deicer” on the pictured sign meant. De-icer; got it. I thought “deicer” was some technical term flying over my head.

My ma back in Upstate NY has already had snow. We are late to the party, but of course people there are not wimps so that helps. :)

Sustained a fairly remarkable sunburn yesterday playing sand volleyball, and wondered for a minute what I’d be doing had I stayed at Alki instead of moving to Sandy Eggo. OIC. Would be making that bread and milk and deicer run.

Beer and frozen pizza. The two items that always vanish from the store. Do you have a full supply? ;P

Funny, I went to the store and stocked up today, because I needed to anyway, but the irony is that if we do have a big storm on Sunday that will be about the time that it’s time to replenish the fridge and cupboards. Ah well!

I’m in the “let it snow” category. Living walking distance to the Junction and being physically able to walk there means that I can buy what I need even if there is snow (no need to be prepared!)

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you see it) this year we won’t be getting any more than the usual light dusting we see every year. I too am in walking distance to the junction but during the storm of 2008 I learned I’m also in walking distance of georgetown, downtown, and even magnolia. Seattle is a small and very walkable city and with the success that companies like REI have seen I was surprised when so many people simply gave up and declared themselves snowbound.

Sorry, comment time is over.
