West Seattle Weather Watch: No, it’s NOT a sign of impending snow

One day after Metro‘s winter-weather briefing for the King County Council (our update with a link to the PowerPoint presentation is here) – which included an explanation of the “memorandum of understanding” between the city and county to make sure bus routes are prioritized during future snow – SDOT is doing snowplow practice again today, for at least the second time this fall. Thanks to Leah for the photo – one of 2 she saw on the Edmunds/41st hill – and also to Cheryl for a tip via Twitter. SDOT tells us its annual winter-weather briefing for the media will happen sometime next week; they drew up lots of new policies and procedures for last year, after Snowpocalypse/Snowmare woes in late ’08, but never got the chance to put them to use. No need to wait for that, though – this winter’s snow-routes map is already available online.

…because if it WERE snowing, the snowplow would be somewhere ELSE!

Isn’t there a 7-11 right across the street from there, at Barton & 35th?

Sarelly, that’s “Super Deli Mart.” Similar type of thing.

You know what amazes me about West Seattleites is there is always the expectation that your neighborhood deserves more than others in the city. The city is working with a lot less money & staff this year than any other year and yet SDOT is putting themselves out there to be prepared and YOU criticize them for that!! What a bunch of crap! Each of you should run away with tails draggin! I think it’s time West Seattle did more physical shoveling and less mouth action!!

Oh, TOTW, you can’t generalize about an entire section of the city because of a couple grumpy commenters. Nonetheless, a few things of interest … which you are probably well aware of … West Seattle is physically the largest neighborhood in the city; and certainly the hilliest (including the highest point in the city). It was the hardest-hit in the 2006 windstorm (people here were out for days longer than pretty much anyone else in the city) and in the 2008 snowstorm – then of course there was the 2007 rainstorm, which hit parts of WS so hard that they became the cover photo for a local government report (we were asked to connect an agency with a reader-contributed pic of a house facing rising waters). So I would defend our fine neighborhood overall – not to say this justifies bitching, but to your point regarding expectations – as perhaps suffering from a wearying abundance of experience. As of course city workers are, too. – TR
