West Seattle Bridge reopens after rollover, westbound closure

ORIGINAL 9:19 PM REPORT: Police are closing the West Seattle Bridge westbound right now at the scene of a one-car rollover, according to initial scanner reports. Via e-mail, Debra, who just drove past, says the rolled vehicle looked like an SUV: “Debris was strewn far … ended up on wheels.” No word yet on injuries – some of the initial responding units have been canceled – but again, the (high-rise) bridge is closed westbound right now.

9:30 PM UPDATE: Medics on the scanner have reported a 25-to-30-year-old woman with a suspected head injury, being rushed to Harborview Medical Center right now via Medic 10. Though the final determination will be up to Seattle Police investigators, the medic discussion included a description of the crash as “high-speed.”

9:49 PM UPDATE: Police have called for help to impound the wrecked car and also for an SDOT crew to come cleanup what was described as a 10′ x 10′ spill at the scene. As Diane points out on Facebook, the westbound side is actually open till everyone heading that way is detoured off onto the Admiral offramp. Via Twitter, Brad notes that the Mariners’ game just got out, which means more drivers heading this way.

10:22 PM UPDATE: Per the scanner, the bridge is now open again. Adding a photo atop the story, taken by Christopher Boffoli. He says the vehicle appears to be a Mercedes SUV. No word on the victim’s condition – according to one witness, it appears she was the driver.

copy of my comments on FB:

I just looked out my window at the bridge; it looks like all westbound traffic is being diverted to lower offramp to the right; and all westbound is VERY backed up

I just looked out again; westbound completely backed up, full of cars in all lanes, probably all the way back to I-5; cars are coming off single file in diversion at point that TR shows

They are actually diverting traffic off to the delridge exit, not the admiral exit. My friend just got here and was telling me about it.

I was wondering about that; seemed like it might be earlier exit than Admiral

Sorry – Christopher Boffoli just reported in – he got as close as he was able to and he says it’s Delridge, so I’m amending. Adding a photo too. – TR

yep, just went out to look again; traffic all moving westbound up the bridge

FYI, high speed in trauma lingo just means over 35mph as the mechanisms of injury are different than low speed. It really isn’t an actual estimate of the vehicle’s speed, though obviously that still matters. Tough to tell for certain but it looks like the airbag deployed. Hope she’s ok.

Thanks, TMQ. I was going to note that since they didn’t call out TCIS and keep the bridge closed longer, it suggested probably not life-threatening injuries, but I didn’t want to go that far in speculation. – TR

I was merging onto the bride from I-5S and she came on from the North and came very close to my passenger side door. She was weaving all over the place. She was driving erratically at high speed. Other vehicles were moving out of her way. When we came up by the port we could see pieces of her car. My friend called 911. It is amazing she didn’t hit or hurt anyone else with the way she was driving. I’m guessing her speed was very high as her gym bag and other articles were about 50 yards in front of her vehicle after it finally stopped.Hope she is okay.

My friend and I were heading out of West Seattle, down the hill last night and saw this. We think it must have JUST happened, because there were cars stopped in both directions and the traffic back up West bound wasn’t really bad.. plus ALL the major Emergency responders were comeing from North and South Bound I-5 as we were headng to I-5. It looked WAY worse than it apparently turned out. Hope the driver of the SUV is ok and will have a speedy recovery from the accident. Glad no one else was hurt.

Does anyone know why the West Seattle Bridge was closed 10/2/2010 going Eastbound around 1:50 PM?

    • WSB October 3, 2010 (10:21 am)

Yes, we reported on that separately as it happened:
      https://westseattleblog.com/2010/10/crash-on-eastbound-west-seattle-bridge
      .
No details on the crash – it was way at the other end, and we still aren’t sure why they closed the bridge all the way to this end for half an hour, but as soon as we found out about it we worked to get the info out (on Twitter and Facebook too for those who were mobile) – TR
