King County Executive joins ‘Walk to School Month’ celebration

(WSB photo by Ellen Cedergreen)
Walk to School Month” is going out in style – and this morning at White Center Heights Elementary, in the Greenbridge neighborhood that starts just across Roxbury from West Seattle, the style was a blue school sweatshirt for King County Executive Dow Constantine. We’ll have more photos, and video, up shortly at partner site White Center Now; later today, Roxhill Elementary School has its own Walk to School Month celebration – but (as mentioned here during our Monday coverage of librarian Pat Bliquez’s special honor) it’ll be a Walk *from* School event!

Walking to school is great! Too bad that the district’s new school assignment policy does not take proximity into account for students. My kid lives two blocks (one of them a public staircase) from an elementary, but was assigned to another school nearly a mile distant.

I trust you’re referring to the Seattle district (this happened to be in Highline). Gives us occasion to mention that there is an upcoming West Seattle meeting about how the new Student Assignment Plan is going, and the transition – 6:30 pm November 16th at West Seattle High School:

nice idea, I wonder if we’ll walk to school …. when the time comes at our house. the designated walking route is 1 mile along a street with no sidewalks.

yet Bridging the gap has passed over the sidewalk project several times, but hey, at least WS will have rain gardens, and have had new street trees planted.
keep your eyes out for the kids ! I get nervous in the morning when I see kids standing in the street, in the dark, waiting for the bus…..

…I used to walk 5 miles, up hill, in 3 foot snowstorms. No, wait–that was my mom–she grew up in Minnesota! We walked 3 blocks to our elementary school; 7 blocks to our Junior High School; and 6 blocks to High School. It was part of the ritual of going to school!

Sorry, comment time is over.
