Video: Flames char newly unfenced mini-park by The Hole

Thanks to Josh Rogers for sharing his video of a startling scene right next to The Hole on Tuesday night – big flames from a short-lived incident that was on the 911 log as a “brush fire.” We headed that way from Alki after getting a text about it, but it was long out when we arrived – the location was obvious, though since even in the dark, the blackened street sign and burned plants were clearly visible. This is the “mini-park” recently unfenced as part of some work around The Hole, the long-stalled 39th/Fauntleroy development site once known as Fauntleroy Place. We’ll be checking with Seattle Fire Department later this morning to ask about the cause. 2:38 PM: According to SFD’s Helen Fitzpatrick, the firefighting crew didn’t detect anything suspicious about the fire, so a marshal wasn’t called out, and the report only boils down to, brush fire, quickly extinguished. Here’s what the site looked like this morning:

    This could be biblical.

And people thought this fence was gonna get tagged. Hooliganism, or a thoughtless driver tossing their cigarette butt out the window at the stoplight? I’d be interested to know.

I have a message out to the Fire Department’s media team. They’ve had a building fire and the Highway 99 heavy-rescue response to deal with overnight so I may not hear back immediately but will add the update to this story when available. Lucky it was virtually kitty corner from Station 32 – as noted, we got a text about it and headed that way from Alki, but the scene was clear 20 minutes after the call.

WOW we passed by here after a movie around 11:30 and saw 3 of our locally know drug dealers standing there and at first thought they were tagging the electrical box that is right there, I wonder if they set this fire as it is exactly where they were standing!!

I was at the gas station across the street from where this happened when it started. There was a guy at the gas station acting weird so the owner had him leave (the owner has seen this guy before) – I watched him walk across the street and like 30 seconds later – my husband said “hey there are flames across the street.. we gave the information to the police that were on scene – the fire was really close to the power lines and was a little scary but the fire department had it out quick.

Good lesson for everyone trimming their pampas grass and thinking “there’s GOT to be a better way.”

Sorry, comment time is over.
