West Seattle scene: Junction house on the move

Thanks to Larry Nitkey for that photo from 4516 42nd SW (map), where one of the houses scheduled to be cleared away for future development is in the process of being moved. According to Larry, “One of the contractors said they are moving this to 47th & Stevens.” This is one of four houses on the site of the 42nd/Oregon development that’s been in the works for more than 2 years. This house in particular, in fact, came up in a WSB discussion two years ago about saving old houses. 2:07 PM NOTE: Went by to check on progress, and crews are doing some work on the structure; we’ve got a message out to the construction firm to see if there’s a timetable for actually moving it. LATE-NIGHT NOTE: We did talk with the firm’s proprietor – the move actually is still more than 2 weeks away, very early July 17th.

I think that house used to have a second story! Interesting that they sheared it off before the move.

I just talked to the construction/moving proprietor and won’t have time to write the whole thing up till after an interview we’re racing off to .. but they had to take the roof off for height clearance under power lines. The move won’t be till mid-July.

So happy to see this house moved instead of demolished. We rented that house for 6.5 yrs. And it was a great house. It did have a second story- mostly unfinished attic but with one nicely finished bedroom. The main floor dining and living room and kitchen were very nice. It’s great to see it move to a new location.

My husband and I drove by the house Sunday and were afraid it was being demolished. We are glad to know it is being moved. The front lead glass windows give it a charming appearance. Our own house was built in 1931 and has the original mahogany woodwork (never painted). The kitchen still has the original slatted “California Cooler” but the ventilation holes are blocked. We will watch the move and restoration with interest!

A neighbor pointed out this article to me. We live at 47th & SW Stevens, and there is no place to put a house here, save for the street vacation south of Stevens on 47th., which is city right -of-way. It used to be Offerman’s delphinium garden, until it was developed in the late 1950’s. There is, however, a vacant lot on the northeast corner of 46th ave. SW & SW Stevens. I wonder if that is it’s intended destination.

We are writing a followup over the weekend and in the meantime have been provided a flyer that was supposedly handed out to neighbors – 2758 46th SW is listed as the address it’s going to.

Sorry, comment time is over.
