West Seattle scene: The early bird gets the berry

February 10, 2010 at 9:50 pm | In West Seattle news, Wildlife | 4 Comments

Spring has almost sprung and West Seattleites are sharing beautiful bird photos. (Wait till you see the eagle couple tomorrow!) Katie sent this pic, explaining, “Today there were lots of robins in my neighborhood near the Junction. Dozens were all over two holly trees in my yard, eating berries and singing away!”

  1. Yes, a lovely bird and I wish it well. But now it will digest the berry, and in some city park or green belt, expel the seeds. English holly is an invasive pest, crowding out native trees. Please uproot those hollys and replace them with something non-invasive. See http://www.seattlepi.com/local/247350_urbanforest07.html.

  2. Uproot hollies? This is a full time job! I’ve found weenie little hollies with but two leaves…..attached to a three foot tap root that refused to be pulled up. And with more than two leaves, you have a nearly unkillable shrub. Devils!

But I did see my first robin last week, hopping on the ground underneath a rhododendron in which was built a pretty little robins nest last year with three babies. Same mother, same nest, returned to the scene?

  3. Add to this the early drumming of woodpeckers . . .

  4. Fabulous! The Great Backyard Bird Count is this weekend; there’s an event at Seward Park — not West Seattle, but certainly related to the subject matter! : )
