West Seattle restaurant news: Phoenecia reopens tonight

Just got a call from William Khazaal, son of Hussein Khazaal, whose untimely death last summer closed Phoenecia on Alki: They are officially reopening the restaurant TONIGHT, 5 pm (till at least 10 pm). The Khazaal family discussed their plans for the restaurant in a recent interview with us – in case you missed it, here’s the story. The menu will include “small plates” as well as entrees, and a new focus on something they told us Hussein Khazaal had been experimenting with – artisan pizza.

ADDED 8:50 PM: WSB’er “grr” was among the reopening-night diners and shared these photos:

He says that’s lamb-curry ratatouille and seared arctic char. They’re also trying the vegetarian squash pizza.

I was perusing a 2009 Zagat’s Guide the other day and noticed Phoenecia on Alki was one of the thirty restaurants mentioned for the Seattle area – impressive!

I wish them much success with their re-opening.

I went to all three of the tastings of the new menu at Phoenicia, and trust me, you will not be disappointed in the food. The small plate entrees are delicious, but what I think is the real star are the pizzas. The crust is so good–it’s crisp and flaky, but with a good bite to it. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever had before. My two favorites are the pesto pizza and the squash and gorgonzola pizza. Please go and support the reopening of Phoenicia. You won’t be disappointed.

We dropped by last night…and it was wonderful to see familiar faces carrying on the tradition of Hussein. It’s a new interior, as seen by the photo, with some new dishes too. It was packed…thanks in large part I suspect to the WSB. Planning on making it, once again, our favorite restaurant in West Seattle. Congratulations on the re-opening.

I was lucky to be at the restaurant last night for the “soft opening”. It was incredible… within minutes of people seeing lights on the tables, the place was full. Those who couldn’t stay, stuck their heads in the door to shout “hooray!” about the opening of the restaurant. The new decor is extremely inviting, the new culinary creations exquisite, and the old entrees memorable. It’s going to be a great success and Chef Hussein is one very proud dad and husband smiling down from heaven! Best wishes to the Khazaal family and Congratulations on a job well done!

We had the most fabulous dinner tonight at Phoenecia! The Lamb Curry was to die for, small plate offerings were fabulous, they had several great wines to choose from, and the service was spectacular. Hussein would be so very proud of what his family has accomplished! We truely felt his presence in every aspect of our meal. As we reflected on our evening spent there we all agreed that it was the best meal we’ve had at a West Seattle restaurant in a long time. Kudos!! We’ll be back again and again . . .

We tried this restaurant for the first time tonight and we were very pleased. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. I can’t believe that in all the years we’ve lived here we never took the time to check it out. I’m so glad we took the time tonight… and we’ll be sure to do so many nights for years to come!
