West Seattle Weather Watch: Mudslide behind Alki building

Didn’t catch a name, but thanks to the caller who tipped us to this – a mudslide behind a residential building in the 1200 block of Alki Avenue SW (map). No injuries reported, and the residents we saw told us they had NOT been asked to leave – authorities reportedly showed up, checked it out and left. It took out part of a fence behind the building:

But it’s yet another reminder about potential perils of the soggy season – the city has landslide-awareness info here, including what to do if it happens to you.

what a bummer, that will be a pain to clean up. i am glad that no one was hurt-
one of the most common reasons that slide happen are when hillsides are allowed to become covered in english ivy or himalayan blackberry- also very shallow rooted. this shallow rooted invasive plant leave slopes really vulnerable to landslides. every time i walk on alki, i look towards the land behind all the buildings and feel like it is a slide waiting to happen. some serious erosion control needs to be done along with ivy removal and tree planting to hold the soil in place.

Is all of the hill behind the “Gold Coast” of condos along Alki Ave a slide prone area? Or just in pockets?

Sorry about posting that twice, my computer froze and I thought it did not post . . . Anyway, I hope the hill gets shored up & safe so that it is stable for all the people living there.

Sorry, comment time is over.
