West Seattle restaurant watch: Zeeks Pizza’s target date

(December 2008 WSB photo)
After reporting a week ago that the future Morgan Junction location of Zeeks Pizza had applied for its beer/wine license, we checked with Zeeks vice president Greg McClure to see how they’re progressing toward that planned spring opening. (Greg’s the executive who first confirmed to us last September that Zeeks would be taking over the space where Corner Inn abruptly closed in June.) Heard back from him this morning:

We can’t wait until the West Seattle store opens and we think it is going to be a great fit for the neighborhood. That corner is going to be a really great place- you’ll have the Beveridge Place Pub, Feedback once it opens, and Zeeks Pizza to round it out. … To all those who are wondering when we’ll be open, we are estimating a May 1 opening date. If anybody is interested in being on our mailing list for a grand opening, you can go to our webpage and click on the feedback link and let us know to add your name and mailing address or e-mail address.

Here’s the page he mentioned; we just tested, and you can ignore all the lines that aren’t relevant to “add me to the mailing list” – enter your e-mail address and write in the comment box that you’d like to be on the list for news of the West Seattle restaurant, and you’re done.

This is great news for all the youth sports teams in West Seattle!

What is this Feedback that is opening at the Morgan Junction?

I hear great things about Zeek’s, but I also hope the good folks at Abbondanza just a few doors down aren’t put out of business by this. They have delicious pizza, very reasonable prices, and are locally-owned. Maybe we have the density (and pizza-love) to support both? I hope so.

My dream would be something like Julia’s Restaurant in Wallingford to show up in West Seattle, or a 2nd Alki Bakery in one of the Junctions.

Yo, Feedback is a new rock and roll lounge opening soon where the old Beveridge Place was.

We’ve reported on Feedback a few times — including a brief update last week … they are now within weeks of opening, if all goes well. They have a MySpace site:

yeah I kind of wonder about abbodanza and zeeks competition. Abbodanza is small so maybe there is left over demand.

One taste of Zeek’s pizza, and you’ll be back at Abbondanza. Unless you really like a crust as tough as shoe leather.

Abodonza has a lot more than pizza though, although the proscuitto and caper pizza is our favorite. The pasta is great too. We need more restaurants in the Morgan Junction area so I think the more that open, the more business it should bring to the area in general.

Pizza is certainly subjective. We happened to dine at the Zeeks near Fisher Plaza last night, which is what reminded me I needed to send a note checking on the target date. That’s the closest one they currently have. We also have dined at Abbondanza and enjoyed it – they have a very large and varied menu of pizza and much more. I don’t believe they deliver, which is one place where their operations may diverge – those of us here on the south side of West Seattle, for what it’s worth, still can’t get Pagliacci delivered. The south end of West Seattle is somewhat underserved in general WRT restaurants … at least compared to the north half.

I think both Zeek’s and Abbonodanza have good (though different) pizza and I think they both can succeed. I imagine Zeek’s will deliver (which both Abbondanza and Giannoni’s don’t), so that’s a different business plan. I’m really hoping that this will encourage Abbondanza to become a little more of a cozy Italian trattoria (with good pizza) and less of a “pizza bar” in feel. West Seattle already has lots of pizza places, but very few trattorias, esp. in the south part.

Nothing personal against Zeeks but I don’t think WS needs another pizza joint.

Sorry, comment time is over.
