West Seattle Crime Watch: Bloody break-in, possibly solved

“Only” one crime report to share tonight – it happened to Paul west of The Junction about this time last night:

Edmunds and 47th [map], 9 pm on Friday night. I got home … to find broken glass and a smashed flashlight in my kitchen. Looks like one or two people got in, stole a couple of DVDs of the Wire (ironic), and left a lot of blood – one of them cut themselves badly coming in through the back door window. Definitely felt like opportunists, not a professional job. At least they were nice enough to close the front door when they left, so the cats didn’t get out.

Our e-mail system didn’t get that to us till several hours after Paul sent it; after we e-mailed him back this morning, he sent an update: “The cop that showed up thought that he’d managed to pick up the guy at around 1 am – he’d been called out by someone reporting a vehicle prowl a little further up north, and apprehended a guy with a bleeding right hand.”

Is it me or does it seem like there is a crime spree going on in West Seattle?

Ugh. Ok, I’m gonna put myself out there. I am a person who lives quite comfortably in the mid-section of our laws and guidelines provided us by the good women and men who protect our legal system. I am also a person who has, and is currently, flirting with the lines that separate those that can protect what they have earned by calling the police and can protect what they have earned by calling their buddies to babysit the night while they sleep.

Whether we like or not, our financial status is changing. Please, work all you can to prevent the advancement of the less desirable crowd from entering into your perceived pervue. I am *not* in any way condoning the act of ownership by stealing, I am saying that we need to take more responsibility for those that are so without that they feel the need to take ownership by theft.

Please, by all means report theft and violent violation of home to police. This is outside the lines and not ok. But, at the same time…please consider what you can do to prevent the perceived need to thieve… donate comfort items. Shoes. Coats. Sweaters. Blankets. Hotplates to heat food (if they can find a free outlet).

Don’t just complain. And please, let me say here…if your home was violated, if your safety was compromised…please do NOT put this down to need. Violence is violence. Period.

    But…help.

Please. There a lot of people and a lot of families and KIDS really hurting right now.

Thank you for your patience with my rambling. \

    ~~Tess

“There a lot of people…really hurting right now.”
    .
Especially the knucklehead with the bleeding right hand.

There are LOTS of ways to get help if you and your family are struggling without resorting to burglary. Misplaced sympathies help nobody.

  • CB January 25, 2009 (8:43 am)

Sorry, I have no compassion. These thieves are not down on their luck or recently laid-off. They are drug addicts. People so selfish, they need to invade YOUR home, STEAL your property so they can get their next FIX. Plain and simple.

So yes, donate to your local shelter, food bank and charity, but the dope heads will continue to lie, cheat, and steal.

    Hi

Wondering if a group was targeting the Junction area on Friday. We live near 47th and Alaska and had our exterior basement door kicked in sometime on Friday (we think). The thieves stole a brand-new Trek hybrid bicyle (red). Luckily, there is not access to our home from the basement. We were doing a search of our neighborhood hoping that the bike had been dumped somewhere when we passed by Paul’s house and saw his door being repaired. We exchanged stories and incident numbers to possibly check on whether the crimes were related.

This has nothing to with people that are in need. These are people that have made a choice to take what isn’t theirs and they do so violently. I live in a neighborhood that has been burglarized multiple times by kids working out of West Seattle High. They have decided it’s easier to steal and make quick money. They are not stealing for survival, they are stealing to make money to buy items you and I are doing without.
Skylar Hailey, the perp who has been caught inside people homes is walking around the junction everyday! He and his group are responsible for breaking the social contracts we have set up to live in a society as civil humans.
I understand the edge that many in society are living on, and to those people we all are obligated to care for, however, to assume that the needy are responsible for these crimes is an insult. Greed vs need.

I think we need some elaborate neighborhood watch, and some blowdarts. Okay, kidding about the blowdarts (?), but I think we could really get together on something like this. This is one of the reasons I love that my dogs barks when he sees strangers around our property (otherwise, a very well behaved boy). It definitely worked for getting our drug dealing neighbor evicted, we were able to record instances of drug trades going on, snap pictures, and soon enough, he was OUT! The neighbors in our apartment building got together and had our own neighborhood watch, and a few months later, and with little help from the SPD, he was gone. With everyone working together to get evidence, pictures, etc. to make it easier for the SPD, we could send out a message to the thugs that we aren’t going to stand for it in WS.
This may be a pipe dream, but we could at least try to make it work!

Toad, you are cracking me up today.

The other thing people can do when their stuff is stolen, is check Craig’s list and the local pawn shops. You can mark your property with some of the new pens that show up under ultraviolet light so that if your stuff is recovered, the police will be able to return it to you. Or, you can idenfity that it is yours if you find it in a pawn shop. I used to work across the street from a Pawn shop and when the guy who owned it knew the stuff was hot, he had people who would directly buy from the thieves and the merchandise would never actually go through his store. He did get caught, eventually.

Wow, Neigbhbor, due to the joy of public records, the individual you mention has quite the arrest history. Stuff like residential burglary and car prowls dating all the way to back to 2000 when he was obviously, a minor. It looks like he was arrested as recently as November.

  • WSB January 25, 2009 (3:09 pm)

As reported here previously. Most recently,

The November case is the one covered here in which alert neighbors tipped police
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=11772
His next scheduled court date is later this week and we will be following the case to see what happens.

  • Neighbor January 25, 2009 (3:10 pm)

Magpie-Yes, his trial is set for a later date, who knows if he will end up doing time, until his most recent arrest he has been a juv. now he’s all grown up and over 18. We successfully ran him out of our neighborhood in December. He and his girlfriend actually were renting an apartment on the edge of the neighborhood. He was watched, followed and kept under radar until he left. I cannot tell you how much it pisses us all off to see him strolling around the Junction. He has a 10th grade education and has decided to live the life of a wannabe “gangster”. Where I’m from these kids end up in a ditch. I would suggest everyone contact West Seattle High to view his year book photo which is public record.

Looks like a target to me, I wonder if he can outrun a .357 or two dogs. I know mine would love a piece of his ass. But then again you have to blame the parents for doing a crumy job. He should of probably had his butt whipped when he was younger.

Sorry, comment time is over.
