So does anyone know why diesel is still so high? As I understand it diesel is a byproduct of gas. I’ve also read that more diesel is left over than gas in the refining process. So why the ridiculously high prices?

  • DG November 10, 2008 (8:18 am)

Taxes. The state reasons that diesel is commercial and so they can absorb the tax bill more easily

Ain’t market corrections grand?! $60.90 BBL at the moment of this writing.

We may have to do nightly gas patrol at this rate. Didn’t see any notable drops half an hour ago while driving back from an unrelated media briefing at Don Armeni, but then again, I didn’t pass the ever-dropping Arco … have to head to the precinct a bit later so we’ll see if that one’s changed by then! – TR

I’m going to step out on a short limb and state the obvious… said it several weeks ago too, that we’ll see $2 gas soon, but I’m going to say easily by the end of the month.

Got a note from a friend that in Lexington, Kentucky that unleaded gas there is $1.78 this morning. Costco in Covington this morning is $2.10

Gas at the pumps still changes on Wednesday, no? So, Tuesday at midnight would be the prime time to watch pump prices.
    .
Side note: A few years back I recall talking to the owner of a the station at Alaska & Fantleroy one Tuesday night. The company truck was parked across the street at the then-Schuck’s parking lot. Apparently, he had arrived too far ahead of schedule amd was ordered to wait until Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. to deliver the fuel so it was charged at an increased rate.
    .
    Any idea how/why this is?

Jeebus — you think I could spell “Fauntleroy” and “and” correctly.

Of course we just bought a hybrid…but we did our part to help sagging automobile sales.

  • WSB November 10, 2008 (6:22 pm)

These days it changes almost daily. We drive by at least five gas stations in the course of a day, many days most of the WS stations, and we notice changes on any and every day – we just pick Sunday because generally there’s nobody up changing prices on Sunday nights so it’s stable for a few hours! Which reminds me, I still haven’t been past Arco to see if they’re into the $2.10s … we’re heading out in a bit.

    Calif/Charlestown 7-11
    &
    California/Andover 76
    both down to $2.25 tonight

  • WSB November 11, 2008 (2:17 am)

thanks, Diane! I never did make it to the Arco drive-by. Later today … Marketwatch.com, meantime, has oil at $60-something right now, about the same time I took last night’s reading (er, yesterday morning), so that’s down more than 2 bucks and it would make sense for more gas price drops.

    Calif/Charlestown 7-11
    &
