West Seattle Weather Watch: Rain/wind likely while you sleep

As always, we prefer to watch the National Weather Service “forecast discussion” for more specifics on what’s on the way – it should be updated by 9:30 or so tonight, but the most recent version suggests our area won’t see major effects of the “unseasonably vigorous” oncoming storm till very early tomorrow morning. It’s not too late to go check your storm drains (as advised by Seattle Public Utilities)!

As a weather foamer, I think of the forecast discussion as a derivative of the forecast itself–While it does contain a version of the actual forecast, it is really a measure of how much belief the forecasters have in the forecast. It takes awhile to get the hang of the interpretation, and the individual differences between the forecasters can be fun.

    I also recommend: http://www.atmos.washington.edu/data/wxdisc.cgi

While it is easy to get lost in the myriad choices, the Infrared Loop for the West Coast is my best recommendation, followed by the Water Vapor loop (Esp. if the forecasters call out a WV point in the loop.) IR can mislead occasionally when the WV can show the developing low pressure system.

As I said I am a weather foamer (as in “rabid” foaming at the mouth)…

This discussion was written by a West Seattle resident who works for the NWS. Just so happens I ran across my own discussion while reading the blog…cool !

Hey, Danny, thanks for uncloaking – we will duly note that any time we see a discussion that appears to have your name on it :) here at WSB HQ, we are total weather geeks, and also of course in search of West Seattle angles on EVERYTHING. Tonight at police HQ (story to come on the citizen awards ceremony) we found out a West Seattleite runs the SPD website!

Sorry, comment time is over.
