West Seattle Crime Watch: Burglary updates

So we checked with the Southwest Precinct after getting this e-mail yesterday from Sunny:

Our house was broken into on Tax Day :(

We’re on the 7900 block of 12th Ave SW and both the officer and I suspect the same bra-flinging/pizza-eating group. The thieves helped themselves to some candy and a Coke and made off with some replaceable electronics. They rummaged through my lingerie and really ripped the bedroom apart. The officer walked away with LOTS of evidence which I hope is enough to catch the thieves. I am annoyed about having to replace my pricey toys, but just sick over someone invading our home.

Sgt. Jeffrey Durden at SWP says there’s “no real leads, yet” on the “bra-scattering” burglar. However, he did have more details on the burglary suspect we mentioned in this report from Tuesday night’s West Seattle Community Safety Partnership meeting: “Thanks to good investigative work by patrol officers — three different officers lifted the same suspect’s fingerprints at residential burglary scenes –” prosecutors are expected to seek charges against the suspect, who’s currently in custody in Florida, in three burglaries from the past few months.

After losing almost $20k in stuff in our WS burlgary “event” and having the SPD do absolutely nothing, I am happy to hear that they actually took prints and might be following up on this. In our case, we turned in meticulous records with serial #s, etc. within 24 hours and heard that our case was not being actively investigated because burglaries were a low priority. We were told to get an alarm and check the pawn shops – that was it! Then, we found out that when alarms go off, they don’t respond anyway…again, a low priority. So, really,it feels like we’re all just subsidizing the meth industry with our computers and jewelry and paying higher insurance premiums. I am glad that the pressure is finally getting the SPD to actually nab these guys!

Sorry for your loss heckya! Don’t know how long ago this was or if you ended up with an alarm system, but take it from someone who has had THREE tickets for false alarms (one from a random snowball and two from our “watch cat” jumping at a visiting critter ouside the window with a shatter alarm)…the police do come, and leave you a nice -$$- note. We’ve chosen to take the risk in favor of keeping the alarm, but I’m hoping that (by the sound of recent activity) burglaries are being more actively investigated.

Maybe it’s the attitude of people like ‘heckya’ and the fact that your cops haven’t had a union contract in almost two years, that your average street cop is filled with apathy.

Our car was broken into over the weekend. The window was broke and the stereo taken. There was another car that had their GPS stolen too. We live in Alexander Court on Alki and have a secure, or maybe a now unsecure garage.

OK amused – SPD officers might be without a contract, but they are luring NYPD folks here in numbers because our cops make MORE money. I’m actually amused that you would link cop apathy on property crimes to working without a contract. I think their badges say something like “To Protect and to serve” but I felt neither protected or served by the SPD. I was merely pointing out that it sounded like they are waking up and doing something…and for that I am grateful – just a little late for us.
