Reader recommendation request: Remodeling help
September 19, 2007 at 3:10 pm | In Reader recommendations | 15 CommentsJust out of the inbox (reminder, our RRRs have their own category for your referencing pleasure):
We need a recommendation for a general contractor. We’ve been in
West Seattle for a year and moved here from out of state, so we don’t
know where to begin. The plan is to convert an area of our basement,
the garage and washroom into two bedrooms and a bathroom. We’re
looking for all the obvious; someone reliable, reasonable and good.
Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

It’s called Northwest Design/Build (original name~).
I’ve watched their work for the past month or two and it’s quite diligent:

Check out Tom Mulhall, with Quentin Construction.
West Seattle resident and does good basement remodels.

Well, I can recommend two builders/general contractors. One is an immediate neighbor and friend who has a long list of West Seattle projects (and Seward Park, Queen Anne, CD, et al.) projects he’s done well –
Mark Curtin cell 206-715-0551 home 206-406-0902
and the other is a Ballard builder I know who also has a long list of projects (WS, Ballard) he’s also done well
Todd Schulte phone 206-419-0876 fax 206-789-1172
I know both these gents and their work and both are first rate, honest, hard-working and have a good group of reliable and quality subs they employ.

I second the Todd Schulte recomendation. Todd built a 1000 square foot garage-shop-gym-attic for us a couple of years ago and he is a man of his word. His guys work hard. They are on site every day and make good progress. The project was on time and on budget.

If not hiring an architect, please make sure your contractor is pulling all the right permits and following code requirements – exits from basements can be especially tricky. Best case scenario is a building inspector slapping a few fines on you, worst case is a life safety exiting issue.

I would suggest you sign up for Angie’s List: http://www.angieslist.com. I think it’s less than $60 a year and you get to see the ratings on local companies by people who have used them. I’ve saved more than $60 by using the discounts available.

Ventana Construction – http://www.ventanabuilds.com
Comment by Jen V. — 9:37 pm September 20, 2007 #
I second Ventana Contstruction! They did some extensive work on our basement plus they worked on our neighbor’s house, an old neighbor’s house (a gorgeous job on their basement), one of our best friends’ house (another fantastic basement remodel as well as their kitchen and master bedroom). They are a West Seattle company. They are very thoughtful, thorough, dependable and very good at what they do! Everyone I know who has hired them loved their work. They have a lot of pictures of their projects on their site.
