Trader Joe’s rumor watch
May 31, 2007 at 6:51 pm | In West Seattle businesses | 15 CommentsThe ol’ Trader Joe’s rumor just keeps swishing around WS like a glass of Two-Buck Chuck in a Nisqually-length earthquake. An intrepid reader just e-mailed the company again, hoping perhaps for a pleasant surprise, and shared with us the following response. (Personally, we find the “check back in fall” rather intriguing!)
“At this time, we do not have any confirmed plans for Western Seattle. Feel free to check back sometime this fall for any updates.
Thanks for shopping with us,
Marci

I say we launch a letter writing campaign, and perhaps they’ll finally know we mean BUSINESS! I wrote to them a year or so ago, and got a similar response minus the “check back” part.
Here’s the address:
Trader Joe’s
PO Box 5049
Monrovia, CA 91017

I will send my letter tomorrow. I want my WS TJ!!!!!!
Comment by Ginger Rodgers — 11:35 pm May 31, 2007 #
Maybe after we get more condos in “Western Seattle” we’ll get a TJs.
Metro Market is so much better anyway…..
Comment by eric — 8:41 am June 1, 2007 #
If by “better” you mean more expensive. I will give you that it has a better selection, but “so much better” is pushing is mister!

Met Market is great for its produce, specialty items and hot, prepared foods (which is usually all I get there anyway). Trader Joe’s is great for many items that Met Market doesn’t have, like their own frozen entrees. I think both markets would easily co-exist!

I’d like a TJ’s, too, but…who’s willing to live next to them? They had one slated to come to Morgan Junction and everyone got up a petition against them. Too much traffic, too many parking problems.
Comment by Katherine — 10:52 am June 1, 2007 #
As long as there sufficient parking included with a new TJ’s store (and I’m sure TJ’s wouldn’t agree to a location without that), I can’t imagine a huge traffic/parking problem. I live near Met Market and there is NO problem. Don’t worry!
Comment by Ms_F — 11:47 am June 1, 2007 #
I know of a TJ’s in San Francisco that has its own parking lot, but it still overflows and leads to huge backups down the road. That TJ’s even hires a traffic cop to direct traffic during busy hours. I’d love a TJ’s in WS and would give it tons of business, but I’m just hoping it’s not near my house!

I think I have just figured out why TJ’s won’t commit to coming to West Seattle… I didn’t know there was history of opposing it here. I guess we might as well give it up!

Although it’s VERY early in developmental planning stages, a little birdie told me that a grocer (they did not name them) is in deed doing a survey off of Delridge to see if a grocery store would be viable. It does make sense when you think about the closest grocery store to Delridge residents would be QFC at Westwood, Thiftway at Morgan Junction or the slew of stores near Admiral…all are a bit of a haul. With Delridge under a Development plan, perhaps TJ might go in somewhere along there. It would be a great way to revitalize that area.
Comment by The House — 10:04 pm June 1, 2007 #
House, a grocery would be a great idea down there. I used to live over at West Ridge Park, and while driving over to QFC or Thriftway wasn’t an arduous task, it would’ve been nice to have one closer. As for TJs in that area, frankly the Burien one isn’t all that far from that area of WS – just a quick hop down to 509 from southern Delridge and you’re there. It’s not like it’s a store I go to daily – every few weeks we take a trip and stock up. Even from up near the Alaska Junction, I still find it easy enough to get there. Then again, I come from an area back easy where we had to drive 25 miles to one, so I guess anything is closer at that point!
Comment by Sue — 8:13 am June 2, 2007 #
TJ’s on Capitol Hill (17th at Madison) is very easy to get to from WS, although parking is awkward, but worth considering if you don’t want to go to Burien….

I don’t know what all the hoopla is about trader Joe’s. I’ve never been in one, so I don’t know what they can offer me.
Comment by Jiggers — 6:30 pm June 2, 2007 #
TJ – Please come to west seattle. All my dreams would come true. I go to the Burien one at least every two weeks and stock up. But it would be so nice to have one closer by.

Why, oh why are we getting a QFC next to the Safeway at the Junction? Is anyone looking forward to that???
And then we recently found out that no Grocery Store wanted to move into the large space next to the High Point Library. Walking distance from hundreds of new Townhomes and a lot of existing houses, with nothing but a Walgreens as direct competition. The reason: That market is already saturated with Safeway and the new QFC.
Please, at least give us TJs.
